CRETIN has aligned itself to become a major player in the Chicago Rock & Roll scene. From early 2000 to the spring of 2001, billed as MAHATMA BLONDIE OUTSHINE, and then CRETIN, the band performed a bevy of Chicagoland venues with an extensive set list of cover tunes. By the summer of 2001, the band was ready for a reformation of sound and to make the move into writing its own music. That decision brought about several changes, chiefly, the addition of a new lead singer. A few short months later, not yet satisfied with the name or sound the band had found, added it’s current vocalist to the line-up.
CRETIN’s sound is made by the sum of its four band members. Yoda (on the drums) is at once explosive and controlled, capable of creating walls of sound or open, textured fields. Mike Spencer rounds out the rhythm section with an expressive and harmonizing bass sound that simultaneously drives and accentuates each song. Keith Thackston’s haunting lyrics and aggressive melodies enter to elevate songs to their highest potential, but it is ultimately Jeremy Nicholls on lead guitar that fills each song with methodical composition and incredible detail. The complexity, pace and intensity behind Jeremy’s inspired riffs serve as a catalyst to jumpstart the writing collective that is CRETIN.
The face of Rock & Roll has changed vastly over the last few decades and CRETIN, like many other bands, wrestles with the challenge of creating new music that will survive such changes. With influences such as Tool, Phish, STP, Rush and Black Sabbath, CRETIN aims to create a sound that is unique yet familiar, challenging yet accessible, powerful yet thoughtful and, ultimately, a sound that will endure the ages.
CRETIN has started playing out at local venues…so keep your eyes peeled…and keep your ears pealed for the new demo disc coming soon to a CD player near you.
